Use – Saving resources and saving money

Our customers save resources and money and reduce their environmental impact using our products, services and solutions. Innovations and improvements mean our products use less energy and less paper when customers use available functions. This saves resources and avoids carbon dioxide emissions – from multifunctional devices through to office calculators.

Under the European Union Voluntary Agreement on environmental performance of imaging equipment signed by Canon, we have firm commitments on energy and paper savings.

Energy saving

Almost 100% of Canon products in scope qualify for the Energy Star® scheme. This means their typical electricity consumption (TEC) is among the most efficient. For example, the TEC value for our imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5051i is one of the world’s best in its class at 3.01 kWh, over 70% less than existing models. It was awarded for ‘Outstanding Energy Efficiency’ by the independent Buyers Laboratory Inc. in 2011.

Under the European Union Voluntary Agreement signed by Canon, at least 90% of the imaging devices we place on the European Union market after 1 January 2012 have to qualify for Energy Star®. Canon has already surpassed this level.

A number of Canon products are also labelled under the voluntary Blue Angel scheme (Der Blaue Engel) that operates in Germany. This applies to standard device configurations. Your Canon national office can advise on your specific requirements.

Canon’s on-demand fixing technology (fixing the toner to the paper) also saves energy. Our imageRUNNER ADVANCE range uses a special fixing film and ceramic heater that heats instantly giving faster response from sleep mode, quick first prints and drastically reduced energy consumption – up to 80% less for some models, compared to conventional roller-fixing systems.

In our multifunction inkjet PIXMA MG6100 series energy saving is designed into the functionality so only the application required wakes up from sleep mode. For example, the scanning function works while other functions remain in sleep mode. PIXMA models are 100% Energy Star® qualified demonstrating some of the lowest sleep mode values.

In our calculator range, some run purely on solar power while others have an auto off setting to save battery power.

Resource saving

Picture_orange banner_UseOur products, services and solutions help customers save resources in many ways. A Managed Print Service identifies savings customers can make around their print environment, while Consultancy Services goes beyond print and document management services to focus on the management of information and media and digital processes across multiple channels.

Paper: Product functions and software solutions help our customers manage their printing needs while saving resources.

  • Setting default duplex printing (double-sided) saves up to 50% of paper. Under the European Union Voluntary Agreement (EUVA) signed by Canon, default duplex printing will be set on all devices with this function from 1 January 2012.

  • Printing two or more pages on each side of the paper (2 in 1, 4 in 1, N-up printing) saves even more paper. Under the EUVA, N-up printing will be a standard feature.

  • Setting black and white as default avoids wasting ink.

  • Using secure printing (when the document owner is identified at the printer) stops discarded prints building up on the printer, including confidential documents, and improves information security.

  • Sharing documents digitally – not printing at all – saves even more paper. Find out about Canon’s document solutions.

  • Recent Canon PIXMA devices have an eco setting which shows users how much paper, energy and CO2 they save using correct output settings.

Canon Europe operates a responsible paper procurement policy, based on the WWF Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) Guidelines. This means we buy paper products only from certified or responsibly managed forest sources. Our paper suppliers are monitored as part of our green procurement programme.

Ink: On PIXMA models, individual ink tanks mean less wasted ink as each tank can be replaced separately. Both PIXMA and our large format printers (LFP) use water-based inks. As these contain no solvents, they have a low environmental impact. The LFP ink tanks also have a sub-tank that ensures the ink cartridge is completely used before replacement and there is an economy mode for less colour critical prints, saving around 20% ink on average. Find out more about our PIXMA models and our large format printers.

Toner: Our laser toner cartridges can be fully recycled, constantly re-using resources for maximum efficiency. Find out about our laser toner cartridge recycling programme, which operates in 16 European countries.

Remanufacturing: Find out how Canon gives multifunction printers a second life by remanufacturing.

Find out about Canon’s obligations for end of life products.

Carbon dioxide saving

Printing more efficiently, using less energy and customising print options all mean fewer CO2 emissions. In Austria, Canon has gone even further by offering carbon neutral printing to customers buying or leasing a new imageRUNNER ADVANCE device. The offer includes offsetting all CO2 emissions from printing and servicing. Find out about Canon Austria’s carbon neutral printing.

Time saving

Pre-delivery installation ensures all product configurations are thoroughly tested prior to delivery to the customer. This means shorter installation times and faster availability of the product for their business. Packaging waste is collected and, where possible, the plastic is recycled into new products.

After installation, our e-maintenance service means customers get a faster fix as their device can be maintained remotely. This saves CO2 from an engineer’s visit too.
