Study finds printing helps fans follow UEFA EURO 2008™ closer and “get more involved” in the tournament UEFA EURO 2008™creates better working atmosphere and inspires employees to work harder, it is claimed Fixture lists, TV schedules and tournament statistics top the list of items printed during the tournament
ZURICH, June 06, 2008 – New research from Canon Europe, world leader in digital imaging technology and official sponsor of UEFA EURO 2008™, has revealed that a third of football fans believe printing relevant information will help them feel more involved in the European Football Championship. At the same time, 59% of fans claim that the tournament will actually improve the atmosphere at work. Canon Europe commissioned research into the relationship between printing and football around the time of a major tournament, such as UEFA EURO 2008™. As well as enabling a third of fans to feel more part of proceedings, the pan-European study of more than 4,500 European football fans discovered that printing will help 40% of fans follow the tournament more closely. Markus Naegeli, Managing Director, Canon Switzerland says, “The power of print for getting fans involved in one of the world’s greatest sporting events, such as UEFA EURO 2008™, should not be underestimated. Beyond the office, where a high-quality, efficient and cost-effective print function is fundamental to the economy of a business, print plays a crucial role in people’s daily lives.” Fans plan to print a range of information during the tournament; the most popular being fixture of lists (78%) as fans stayed ahead of the game in planning their diaries over the coming weeks. Other relevant information which proved popular to print includes TV schedules (49%) and tournament statistics (44%). “With the European Football Championship coming around every four years, no fan wants to miss their team’s crucial matches,” says Markus Naegeli. “Fans are using the printed word to ensure that they don’t miss any action, and to follow the tournament more closely.” Preparation around UEFA EURO 2008™ is key for supporters, with more than half (52%) of fans spending between 30 minutes and 5 hours searching for and printing relevant information in the build-up to and during the tournament. Continued Naegeli: “Fans will spend a significant amount of time planning for UEFA EURO 2008™, ensuring they are up-to-date with all the news, statistics, developments and results as the tournament unfolds. Printing information plays a crucial role in this process.” Football fever enters the workplace
59% of fans claimed the atmosphere at work is much better around the time of sporting events such as UEFA EURO 2008™. But far from causing a distraction at work, 40% of fans stated that they would actually work harder during the day in order to leave on time to watch a game, therefore eliminating concern that bosses may have about the perceived disruptive effects of major sporting events. Naegeli explains: “The European Football Championship will inevitably have an impact on peoples’ working lives. The conversations people have about football around the water cooler and throughout the office will create a more fun and enjoyable atmosphere in the workplace.” Through its comprehensive portfolio of hardware and software solutions, Canon enables businesses to reduce costs and increase the quality and efficiency of their imaging and printing. For 30 years, UEFA has had a relationship with Canon. This association will continue at UEFA EURO 2008™, with Canon’s technology and consultancy ensuring that tournament staff will be able to print whatever they want at the touch of a button.
