Canon Unveils We Speak Image National Fashion Collection

LONDON, September 17, 2007 – Canon, world-leader in imaging solutions, has unveiled a unique fashion collection by leading British designer Matthew Williamson. The We Speak Image fashion collection was inspired by images taken by members of the public across UK and Ireland and seeks to capture the ‘essence’ of the nation. This is the first of 17 similar projects to take place across Europe.

To mark Canon’s second year as Principal Sponsor of London Fashion Week,  Canon asked members of the public to upload their most creative and iconic images – which represented the spirit of their nation – to a unique, custom-built website www.canon-europe.com/wespeakimage. From the 3,000 British and Irish images uploaded, the most popular were given to fashion designer Matthew Williamson who used the images to inspire a ‘national’ fashion collection, created with the help of Canon’s state-of-the-art imaging equipment.[1]

For every image uploaded, Canon made a donation to its humanitarian partner, the British Red Cross. Matthew also designed a limited-edition umbrella to help raise additional funds, which is available at Sketch Parlour (9, Conduit Street, London, W1S 2XG), London Fashion Week and London Fashion Weekend (Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, SW7 5BD), where the collection will also be displayed.

James Leipnik, Chief of Communication and Corporate Relations, Canon Europe said: “The UK and Ireland We Speak Image fashion collection, one of seventeen produced across

Europe, is a stunning example of how Canon and the fashion industry work hand in hand to create incredible moments of fashion and artistic expression.”

Commenting on the project, Matthew Williamson said: “For me, it has been enormously exciting to have been involved with the We Speak Image fashion campaign. The final selection of images which were taken by the public were fantastic, and all had elements which found their way into the garments; from textural elements and graphic qualities, to the colour palette, they have each played their role in inspiring the final collection. Canon’s fashion projects are always glamorous and creative, and I’m delighted to have worked alongside them in helping the public to unlock their potential and become part of something truly spectacular.”

Sir Nick Young, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross said: “We are delighted to have been involved with this latest campaign and are enormously grateful to all of the participants across the UK and Ireland who uploaded their images. The donations from Canon will continue to raise vital funds for youth projects in the UK and across Europe."

The We Speak Image fashion campaign is being rolled out across 17 European countries involving 17 leading designers including Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (France), Elio Fiorucci (Italy) and Sisi Wasabi (Germany).

The We Speak Image fashion campaign follows on from Canon’s successful The Other Side of Fashion project in 2006 which raised hundreds of thousands of euros for European Red Cross Societies. The project recruited the talents of 100 of the world’s most influential style icons to reveal an insider’s perspective on the international fashion scene. The resulting photographic collection was launched across Europe at a glittering celebrity-led event in London and was made available through a glossy magazine and public exhibitions across Europe.
