Copier Re-manufacturing

Long before the environmental movement became popular, Canon was developing recycling plans in one of the company’s mainstay areas, the copier division. Re-manufacturing of copiers began in 1992 at the Canon Virginia factory in the United States and in the United Kingdom, a plant dedicated solely to re-manufacturing came into operation in 1993.

Currently copier re-manufacturing has been transferred to our copier plant in Germany.

Amidst an increasing social demand for recycling, industry is being asked to produce environmentally sound products. At Canon, we are pushing ahead with recycling of copiers, printers and all of our other products.

Re-manufacturing and recycling in relation to copiers got underway in 1990 with the launch of the campaign to collect used cartridges contained in personal copiers. Canons Dalian Factory in China opened in September 1991 and reconditioning commenced at the plant in November 1992.

We are currently at the stage of developing a comprehensive reconditioning system covering all copier parts, the bodies themselves and even consumable items. In Japan, rental and demonstration machines are already being reconditioned at the Sayama factory of Nippon Typewriter, an associated company. This is in addition to the re-manufacturing line at the Canon Virginia factory, and our European plant, Canon Giessen in Germany.

Canon is developing reconditioning bases throughout the world. In addition to copier re-manufacturing, we will be widening the scope of reconditioning to include printed circuit boards, fixing rollers and other parts and units. Major structural changes are underway, taking in product development, production and sales, as well as distribution and service, as part of our efforts to create a complete, copier-reconditioning system.
