In 1998, Canon set up a representative office in Dubai to help partners deliver even more with additional on-the-ground support. By 2001, Canon had transformed into a full subsidiary with extensive logistics facilities, and in 2002 moved into its spacious new head office at Dubai Internet City with its rapidly growing staff. As of January 1st, 2005, Canon North Africa S.A.S. (CNA) based in Paris became a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of Canon Middle East and oversees French speaking African countries. Canon Middle East further expanded its area of responsibility to include East African markets in June 2011. CME today manages sales, marketing and technical support activities across 45 countries in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE, as well as East African and French-speaking African countries. At Canon we believe in the power of image: the power to communicate quickly and easily, to convey the slightest of subtleties, to elicit the strongest emotions and to simplify the most complex of tasks. We bring our passion for image to life by aligning the Canon brand with a wide range of high profile activities, from advertising campaigns such as the recent corporate ‘We Speak Image’ campaign to key cultural and sporting sponsorships, and European events and exhibitions. Our brand platform ‘You Can’ captures the essence of the Canon brand and is designed to inspire our customers to explore their creativity and be empowered by our technologies. With Canon – You Can Through official sponsorships in sport such as the UEFA Super Cup™ and MTN Africa Cup of Nations football tournaments, and environmental activities such as our support for WWF, Canon expresses a passion for the power of image and a commitment to our Japanese corporate philosophy of Kyosei which means ‘living and working together for the common good’. Discover more about Kyosei. Canon in the Community Canon Middle East recently named Nayla Al Khaja, the UAE’s first woman film producer, as Canon Brand Ambassador and also announced its support to the “BLOOM! Cine Startups” initiative organised by Nayla's company D-SEVEN Motion Pictures to encourage budding filmmakers, especially the youth, to make their first film using Canon DSLR cameras. Further, Canon Middle East is committed to supporting photography in the region and making it accessible to all. As a sponsor of the region’s leading photographic event, Gulf Photo Plus, CME helps to provide local talent with the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s most internationally acclaimed photographers. As a global leader in imaging technology, Canon is at the forefront of photographic innovation and aims to share its expertise with talents in communities across the world. Canon has therefore partnered with the ICDL GCC Foundation, the governing body and the certification authority of the International Computer Driving License program (ICDL) in the GCC States and Iraq, to hold the ICDL Summer Camps that provide extensive computer training to thousands of students all over the region in accordance with the globally recognised ICDL standard. Environmental stewardship is also central to CME. Canon’s corporate philosophy “Kyosei” believes in living and working together for the common good. Environmental responsibility is a guiding principle of that ethos. Viewing the product lifecycle in terms of its three stages - produce, use and recycle - Canon contributes to minimising environmental burden through the effective application of environmental technologies. An important milestone was the attainment by Canon Emirates of the ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management system. Canon Middle East also participated in Emirates Environmental Group’s (EEG) “UAE Clean Up drive” initiative in December, 2010, where more than 50 employees from CME and Canon Emirates participated. CME has also extended its support to EEG’s Aluminum Can Collection campaign which was run until May 2011. Another significant development that complemented Canon Middle East’s environmental commitment was the signing of the company’s licensing agreement with Emirates Wildlife Society – WWF (EWS-WWF) for the X-MARK 1 solar-powered business calculator that is manufactured using residual parts from Canon digital cameras. With its extensive contributions to the society and the environment, Canon was declared winner in the Medium-Sized Enterprises Category of the Arabia CSR Awards 2011 in Dubai.
